Course structure

Course A/B/C

Basic module
(8 hours per week)

The A 2 level is intended for participants who have a basic knowledge of the German language. The course programme will focus on conversation skills, while the book will be used to repeat and practice reading, writing, listening skills and grammar.

The B 1 and B 2 level concentrates with its basic module on an improvement of oral and written communication skills, while at the same time practising listening and reading, as well as grammar. The book will primarily be used for vocabulary expansion.

The C 1 level aims at introducing the language typical of scientific and technical writing. Specific aspects of advanced-level grammar is repeated as required, special emphasis is placed on vocabulary expansion.

Optional modules
(8 hours per week)

At all levels (A 2, B 1, B 2, C 1), students are offered a choice of modules in the following fields:

  • Conversation (discussing and reasoning)
  • Writing (creative writing, project work "newspaper" or "diary")
  • Listening (texts, songs/radio plays, news)
  • Reading (literature, texts with a scientific / economic background)
  • Grammar (in everyday and scientific language)
Cultural studies
(8 hours per week)

Topics will be closely related to the language course contents as well as the organised social activities and the excursion programme. At all four summer course levels, we will deal with the following regional, historical, political and cultural aspects:

  • Braunschweig, Henry the Lion and the dukedom of Saxony
  • Braunschweig during the years of National Socialism
  • History and present-day politics of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • The new federal states: problems and prospects
  • Germany and the European Union
  • Media and the press
  • Current trends in German literature
  • 20th century art
